Ah, the Blood twins! My husband & I knew them well. Gene & George owned the Pickle Barrel, which was not 'rough'. Gene played drums & George played trumpet and piano/organ. Connie Spillane owned the barber shop which is next to Howard's Insurance on Main Street. He did not own the Pickle Barrel, but he played in the band there. The boys were identical twins and they were both policemen. Many days one would be directing traffic on Main Street in front of the Grammar school & the other would be stationed at the intersection of Main & Center. Strangers must have thought they were seeing things when they drove by. George died in a car (not motorcycle) accident in front of Fire Station 3 on Depot Street when he was on his way home from the Tally-Ho early one morning. He had a closed casket with his trumpet on top.
Re: Station 3.....My husband was a call-firefighter there. Yes, two trucks actually did fit in that building. They mostly used a 'brush-truck'. There used to be lots of grass & woods fires because everyone used a barrel in their back yard to burn their rubbish.

Thanks for the update and info. Every now and then I'll ask a townie if they remember the old pickle barrel and I always seem to get an interesting reaction. Oh those were the days I guess...
It wasn't Connie Spillane, I believe the barber was Connie Galvin. Connie Spillane was with the Easton Huskies and other baseball interests. He also smoked 25 cigars a day.
