I received this email today which I passed along to the town:
I am most concerned about the fact that the spraying for mosquitoes was accomplished without proper communication to the public. It seems that the only people who were called were students in the schools. As i drove up to East five corners, i noticed a low flying plane that I was later told was the mosquito spraying airplane. People were walking around and it was about nine thirty at night!! My vegetables have been compromised. I am wondering why this wasn't done at night (between 2 and five a.m. |

| From what I understand the fog goes away within 10 minutes or so and just kills mosquitoes. It doesn't hurt people or animals. I would think that includes plants. I am not sure. I call to have spraying done with kids. Pets. And a garden. My cousin died of triple E in Middleboro. It was horrible. |

Some people don't read newspapers either in hard copy or online. There were stories on TV news about the spraying but no specifics regarding what time etc. but apparently they don't watch the news either.
I had expected that residents might get a call on the reverse 911 system. Appropriate uses for reverse 911 include public halth or general information affecting town residents, not just imminent threats of violence. So far I've only gotten calls about missing Brockton residents. They would have reached more people by doing reverse 911.
Those with organic farms were able to opt out of spraying. |

More infected Mosquitos found.

The town and the state did a great job with the spraying notifications. If this individual didn't know about it then they must live in a cave and use a blackberry instead of a razr maxx.
Concerning the spraying itself, it's a typical half measure. If this is a true public health hazard, and I believe that to be the case, then spray with a chemical that will work and work absolutely. Appeasing environmentalists and the "green" movement crowd is going to lead to the death of a child, senior citizen or someone with already compromised health.
By way of example, it was the eco-mentalists that banned the use of DDT. Sure, the use of it needed to be reduced a great deal, but a worldwide ban is insane and has directly caused the death of tens of millions in Africa alone. In the US, when the Silent Spring bs book caused the outcry to ban DDT, one of the reasons stated was that it was killing the bald eagles. Well, if the bald eagles have to go so that my kids, friends and family don't get EEE, goodbye bald eagles. *The Altamont Wind Turbine farm has killed far more eagles than any chemical ever has.
I appreciate that we don't want pesticides on on our garden vegetables, but if I have to scrub the old cucumber a little more than I normally would, so be it. Spray again and spray the hell out of it.
Other than that I have no real opinion either way. |

Most products used are very low risk, often bacterial agents targeted just for mosquito larvae etc...Normal washing of veggies/fruits will clean any of this off. Here is a link to the state's mosquito control projects: http://www.mass.gov/agr/mosquito/index.htm |

| I don't know how to post links, but Boston.com reports additional spraying in six communities, including Easton. Spray date to be determined. |
