Well it's that time of year. With Halloween almost upon us, the thought of our local town spooks comes to mind. Let's hear the stories here.
I'm familar with the story of the ghost that haunts Unity Church. I hear he's quite the ladies man. There is also many stories about the old Blackthorn Tavern. A waitress once told me of a time dimension experience she had. It's seems she reported to work one Saturday afternoon and walked in. The place was completely empty and without a sound. She called out but nobody replied. She went back out and there were cars in the parking lot. She went back in and the place was full of people. She asked where everyone had been and they looked at her crazy and said we've been here. The waitress said she had just come in and nobody was there. The people said they never saw her come in. Spooky!
Anymore stories? |

There was a more recent story about that location where the employees came to work but found the doors mysteriously locked with the owner nowhere to be found! But seriously folks....
There's the noted "blue mist" that appears over Stonehill on certain nights supposedly the spirit of the Ames pilot who crashed at the airfield there, or it could be the ghost of the student who drowned in the pond on campus.
There's the rumor of the Springhill Estate (Elm St) being haunted. Reportedly the owner was an amateur scientist and experimented on humans. It was rumored that hobos and tramps in town would occaisonaly go missing and were thought to be his victims.
Poquanticut is thought to be haunted and where its thought the Buck sawmill was operated by the devil or witches and travellers feared that area, especially at night.
No doubt King Philip's tortured spectre roams these parts as well searching for his severed head to seek revenge on the white men who slaughtered his people and drove them from their lands.
Then there's the many stories of the Hockomock Swamp, ghosts, swamp creatures etc...
That's all I can come up with, but there is an old thread on here somewhere with more, maybe Burt can dig it up. |

| Actually Easton is located in the heart of spooks central, The Bridgewater Triangle. I personally saw the Flying Triangle thing one evening back in 94 that was also reported by the Bridgewater police. The thing just hung in the sky about 100ft from the ground without making a sound. I lived about a mile from where I saw it. I got my camera and went back. It was much higher in the sky but it was the same light pattern that I saw when it was close to the ground. I started to film and it just dissappeared. It took off very fast and was gone. Not sure if it was from out of this world but I've never seen anything like that. |

If ever there were are candidate to be added to Easton's gallery of ghosts, it would be Fred, the turkey of Five Corners. Consider: He showed up one day, unannounced. No one knows where he came from. He feared no humans. He obviously claimed the intersection as his rightful domain, and he must be furious at having been so unceremoniously disposed of. On one of these dusky afternoons or evenings, will he return to haunt the drivers as they try to safely work their way through the converging traffic? |

Parker - just to clarify, Mr. Ames did not die at Stonehill, his plane crashed in Randolph, he was drunk. My uncle saw the plane, said his brains were all over the ceiling and empty booze bottles in the plane. My grandfather worked a few times building the stonewall around the estate on Washington and Belmont Streets. Mr. Ames would come out drunk and fire everyone, then hire them back in a day or two. Happened twice to my grandfather and he did not go back as he needed steadier more reliable work to support his family.

| Thanks for the correction Surotoo, I was always told about a crash there and thought it was an Ames....maybe the blue mist was from the booze vapors! |

There are several stories in Ed Hands "Easton's Neighborhoods" book. Excellent Book. I don't have time to summarize each of them but in addition to some already mentioned there are ghost stories that surround the Shepard house on Bay road, the Wheaton house, Kippy Grant house on 456 Bay Road, the William Webster house at 7 Union Street, Queset House, The devils footprint Legend, etc.
I didn't read anything about a drowning at a pond at Stonehill, but the book mentions a drowning in an indoor pool on the Stonehill property when it was still owned by the Ames family. The pool was covered to be used as a gym and as Hands states "The draining of the pool hasn't stopped members of two generations of Stonehill students from reporting children's voices and a gruesome scratching sound coming from under the floor in the building, Now alumni Hall."

| Ooooh! Townie92... I would love to hear the story of the ghost at Unity Church. I had been down the basement there during the renovations, I didn't see anything but every hair stood up on the back of my neck!! Creepy! |

| I moved this thread to this area as it has a better chance of not getting removed, most everything else gets purged at some point. Have a safe and happy Halloween... |

I understand it's the ghost of a Mr. Chaffin. He was supposed to be a ladies man in life and he doesn't let the fact that he's dead stop him. He likes to pull on womens hair and blow on their necks and into their ears. Other than that he's pretty harmless. |
