Historic Tour of Ames Langwater House & Gate Lodge
Saturday, May 16, 2009
There will be "An Easton Heritage Evening", and is being conducted by the "Friends of the Ames Shovel Works in North Easton, Mass". Funds raised will go towards the support of historic preservation in Easton.
The "Friends" were established to promote the adoption of modifications to the Turner Bros 40B project that will preserve the architectural and historic character of the Shovel Works site. Planned for Saturday, May 16 from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Langwater Mansion, home of Mrs Oliver Ames, the Heritage Evening will feature a tour of the Langwater house built by financier Frederick Lothrop Ames in 1859 and altered six times subsequently; five by FLA during his lifetime and a sixth by his youngest son, John Stanley Ames. There will also be an auction of a variety of items, including some belonging to the Ames family, as well as a wine and cheese reception with hors d'oeurves on the Langwater lawn.
Because of space constrictions, tickets will be limited to 200. Tickets are $50 each.
Further, there will be a limited opportunity for those attending the Heritage Evening to also see the Gate Lodge . This will be a separate ticket at $25. There will be only 60 such tickets due to space and time restrictions. Such tickets will have a time of tour listed on the ticket. Only those attending the Langwater Mansion tour will be allowed to purchase Gate Lodge tickets. These buildings are only opened to some members of the public every decade or two, so this may be a singular opportunity to see these edifices. The Gate Lodge designed by HH Richardson is one of the most celebrated private residences in the country. Please call Lee Williams to obtain tickets.

| This would be a great thing to see. This has always been a private residence and I'll bet not too many folks have seen the interior of these bldgs. I hope the "fundraiser" is not for the Ames family but for the Historical Society etc.... If the Ames' are in trouble, we could lose the irreplaceable Langwater Estate. Hmmmmm, maybe its a good thing CPA is holding all those millions! |

I don't want to give too much away on this before they put out an official announcement, but I can tell you that the fundraiser is definetly not for the Ames family, rather, it's for a specific historic preservation issue in town. The Ames family has been generous to open up their rarely viewed historic and architecturally important family estate for a tour and public viewing only for this special event. As I mentioned, there will be a limited amount of tickets as only so many people can fit in there at one time. I do hope they allow photos... |
