Historical Society offers Harold Keith’s book for sale

|||Today 12:38 PM|GateHouse Media, Inc.|Easton Journal Homepage RSS

What was it like growing up in Unionville in the 1920s and 1930s? In his book “When I Was Growing Up,” Harold Keith, an 1937 Oliver Ames High School graduate, describes living on Washington Street with his parents and his sister Dorothy (Berry). He clearly describes the culture, religious life, and architecture of his town, Easton. The importance of the milkman, meal salesman, grocery man, mailman, and others is effectively described in addition to his school years and teachers. Fairs, dance marathons, radio shows, visits to New York City and summers on Cape Cod were all part of Harold Keith’s early life.

The Easton Historical Society is honored to offer Harold Keith’s fascinating book. Preorders are being accepted until Feb. 28. A check for $14 ($17 if one wants it mailed) should be sent to the Easton Historical Society, P.O. Box 3, North Easton, MA 02356. When the books arrive in six to eight weeks, purchasers will be notified. For more information, call 508-238-7774.

Just received my copy of Harold Keith's book, "When I Was Growing Up." Mr. Keith graduated from OAHS with my parents. What a delight to read about so many familiar things. Easton truly did not change much until the 60's. So interesting - Unionville was perhaps at most only a mile or two from my home on Canton Street in the 'northend', but I learned a great deal about that area from reading Mr. Keith's memories. On page 85 in the book is a picture of the author with family and friends in a boat. He mentions a Francis Maguire. Am wondering if perhaps that young person might be my uncle, Frank Maguire, since we were the only Maguire family I recall living in Easton until the 60's. The book is wonderful..and enhances all of my good feelings and memories about my own childhood in Easton. Thanks to the Historical Society for promoting the sale and to Burt for letting us know about it.
